If you want to keep your smile in tip-top shape, it’s best to prevent oral cancer at all costs. Oral cancer in Chesapeake, Virginia, is a dangerous and serious disease that should never be ignored or overlooked. In fact, if you do ignore the disease, it could result in your smile destruction and even death. So, it’s best to prevent this disease as much as possible, and our Crossroads Dental team recommends doing so by doing the following things:

-Don’t smoke or use any tobacco products. We also ask you to only drink alcohol in moderation. Binge drinking will dramatically increase your chances of developing oral cancer.

-Maintain a well-balanced diet. Doing so will prevent oral cancer as well as keep your entire health in tip-top shape.

-Try to limit your exposure to the sun. Being out in the sun can increase your chances of developing oral cancer on your lips. If you do need to be in the sun, please put sunblock on your skin and lips.

It’s also best to try and detect the disease at the early stages of development, and Dr. Lanier strongly recommends that you do the following things in order to do so:

-Conduct a self-exam at least once a month: Use a bright light and mirror and closely examine your lips, gums, and tongue. Check for any lumps and sores. It’s also beneficial to examine your throat as well as feel your neck for any lumps or enlarged lymph nodes.

-Visit your dentist regularly: If you visit your dentist for your six month checkups, you will also receive an oral cancer screening along with a dental cleaning and exam. This treatment is extremely helpful because oftentimes self-exams make identifying the small, hidden signs of oral cancer difficult.
